Nairobi — Local investors especially the SMEs in Western Kenya have been asked to rise to the challenge of ongoing expansion and construction of roads in the region by expanding their businesses.

They could also open new ones to harness the full potential of the sector.

According to Roads minister Franklyn Bett, a majority of Kenyans live in rural areas and are mainly dependent on agriculture.

He said construction of roads will boost other commercial and socio-economic activities in the area.

Mr Bett said increased activities are expected to create employment opportunities as a well as overall income level and living standards.

The Roads minister said that rehabilitation of Kisumu-Kakamega-Webuye road at a cost of Sh1 billion had already kicked off and two contractors have been given the work.

Mr Bett says that one contractor had started the work from Kisumu to Kakamega while the other will handle the Webuye to Kakamega stretch.

He notes that the construction of Timboroa to Eldoret road will soon start adding that work on the Eldoret-Webuye-Malaba road was in the process.
