Nairobi — The Treasury is set for the second public sale this month of the luxury vehicles formerly used by Cabinet ministers and other top government officials.
The reserve price has been reduced this time round as the government wants to dispose of all the cars surrendered under the new government transport policy.
Pay higher deposits
Bidders will pay higher deposits of Sh100,000, up from Sh30,000 last time.
The sale of 86 vehicles will be between September 22 and 23 by auctioneers Garam Investments, the Treasury said on Tuesday in an advert in the local dailies.
The sale will be at the chief mechanical and transport engineer's godowns on the Machakos-Dunga roads junction.
During the three-day auction conducted in early June, only 15 out of 99 top-of-the-range fuel guzzlers were sold.
Many buyers shied away after the government set high reserve prices of more than Sh1 million. The government said the prices were set by professional valuers and reflected the market rates.
The sale was ordered by Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta in the 2009/2010 Budget as part of austerity measures.
The chairman of the government taskforce on transport, Mr Donald Kibera, said on Tuesday there had been wide consultations before arriving at the new reserve prices to be disclosed on the auction day.
The proprietor of Garam Investment, Mr Joseph Gikonyo, said the deposit was raised by more than 230 per cent to exclude people whose interest was not in buying but finding faults where none existed.
Motor vehicle dealer DT Dobie is to give an independent valuation on the Mercedes Benz brands on sale. Among the brands DT Dobie sells is the Mercedes Benz.
