Nairobi — A man who asked prison authorities to serve him with fish and rice instead of beans was on Wednesday jailed for 20 years and fined Sh24 million for drug trafficking.
Austrian Moser Joachim will serve an additional year in jail if he fails to raise the fine. He was convicted by a Kibera court of trafficking in cocaine worth Sh8 million.
Joachim was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on October 15, 2007, with two kilogrammes of cocaine.
While in custody, he requested chief magistrate Uniter Kidula to order prison authorities to serve him a special diet.
Cannot eat
"I cannot eat ugali and beans. I need fish, rice, soup, potatoes and onions," he had said.
But Mrs Kidula ruled that he be served ugali and sukuma wiki.
Yesterday, prosecutor Isaiah Oyoo said he could be treated him as a first offender.
Joachim refused to mitigate, saying his lawyer was not in court.
But Mrs Kidula went ahead and sentenced him.
"I will deliver the sentence without the accused mitigating. You have 14 days to appeal against the sentence," the magistrate said.
