Nairobi — A district commissioner on Wednesday came under fire from candidates for the Juja parliamentary seat for allegedly campaigning for one of them.
Mr Wilson Njega, the Thika West DC, however, dismissed claims of hosting civil servants in his official residence and bribing them to support a candidate as baseless and malicious.
The allegations were made during a meeting of the 10 candidates, the Interim Independent Electoral Commission and the provincial administration at Gretsa University in Thika.
The meeting nearly degenerated into a shouting match between former MP William Kabogo (Narc Kenya), Dick Githaiga (DP) and the administrator who challenged the candidates to provide proof of the allegations.
Mr Njega denied ever hosting voters in his residence to drum up support for any of the candidates as alleged during the meeting chaired by the registrar of political parties, Ms Lucy Ndung'u.
The Juja by-election coordinator, Mr Bernard Kimani, said he had warned one of the candidates for using government graders as a campaign tool in parts of the constituency.
He also cautioned candidates against transporting voters from a neighbouring constituency on election day saying they would not vote.
The meeting was attended by all the candidates except Mr George Thuo (PNU), who was represented by Thika mayor John Wandui and nominated councillor John Njiru.
The others were Mr Stephen Ndicho (Agano Party), Ms Mary Kirika (ODM Kenya), Mr Jackson Kamau (NAP-K), Mr Francis Gaitho (Safina), Mr Charles Muchai (DP), and Mr David Kigwe (Farmers Party).
