Agricultural estates company, Sasini, has deplored the low tea consumption in the country among the crop's producing countries.
"We should create our own local market and not rely on the global market," the company's sales and marketing manager Arun Deshpande yesterday said.
In 2006, of the total tea production of 310 million kilogrammes, local consumption stood at 16.5 million kilogrammes.
"Local tea consumption is at a critical stage where appropriate awareness need to be imparted effectively to diversify tea markets," he said at the launch of Sasini School Promotion that will provide free exercise books worth Sh10 million to schools.
