Swimming starlet Achieng Ajulu-Bushell continues to scale the heights after she set the world's fastest time at an international gala in Manchester, England.

The 14-year-old Ajulu-Bushell swam 50m breaststroke in 32.22 in the FINA World Championships, which is the fastest in her age-group this year.

The England-based swimmer had told SportFest ahead of the event that one of her goals was to improve her time in the event.

During the pre-championships interview, she said: " Another much harder aim would be to make the semi-final for the 50m breastroke as I am ranked quite well in this event."

Although she finished 19th to exit the event at the heats stage, Ajulu-Bushell had satisfactorily improved her profile.

Kenya Swimming Federation treasurer, David Ngugi, who accompanied the six-member team, said: "Ajulu's performance was beyond expectation considering that she competed against much older swimmers."

"Her time is promising and if she maintains the standard, she is likely to win a medal at the World Junior Championships in Mexico," Ngugi said.

"In general all our swimmers did well at the Championships because each one set at least one new national record or personal best," the official added.

Other swimmers who represented Kenya in the event that ended last week included talismanic Dunford brothers Jason and David, who are studying in the US,

Amar Shah and Akshay Shah who live in the UK and South Africa-based Pina Ercolano. All were in the team managed by Kenya Swimming Federation vice chairman, Martin Dunford.

Achieng is a hot property on the local swimming scene as she holds more than 60 national records including open, junior, age group and newcomers.

Owing to the fact that the Championships doubled up as Olympics qualifiers and attracted the world's best swimmers, the Kenyans pushed hard and smashed several national records.

Ngugi said the Manchester event was a good training ground for Dunford brothers- Jason and David- who have qualified for the Beijing Olympic Games, China in August.

"The Manchester Championships offered our Jason and David a preview of the Olympic Games because they featured all top swimmers from around the world," said Ngugi.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Swimming Association calendar resumes next month after a two months break.

Publicity secretary Winnie Kamau said Aga Khan High will host the first event on May 24-25.

Swimmers expected to compete at the gala include Hanika Patel of Imani School, Kyra Schlachter of Peponi, Rebecca Kamau of Braeburn and Sheil Kotecha from Premier Academy.
