News Article By Macharia Mwangi

He is a bank employee with a difference. While most of his contemporaries are pursuing higher interests in the envied field, Joseph Kabuu Ngecha is rocking the entertainment world.

He has decided to shed the corporate image and throw his hat in the ring in the industry long regarded a preserve of young and talented musicians from the ghetto.

A loans officer with K-Rep Bank in Naivasha, Ngecha is cutting his teeth in the music industry and enjoying every bit of it. He has already produced one album and is on the verge of recording another, in what appears to be a rare combination.

"Music runs in our family, hence my interest in singing," he says as we sit down for the interview. An accomplished guitarist, his kind of music is the Afro fusion which blends the African touch with the western genre.

To underscore his seriousness in making a name in the music industry, he carries along his guitar the work place where he hones his skills during free time. "I can also do R n B and country music which is purely for entertainment purposes, especially at weddings. I actually performed Christmas carols at the Lion Hill Sarova Lodge," says the bank employee.

For his efforts, Ngecha pocketed Sh40,000, boosting his confidence and giving him the much needed shot on the arm. He has released gospel solos which are currently being played at a local radio station. Currently, his has finished writing lyrics for the album he is about to record.

"It revolves around Kenyan politics and the fate of children," he says.

Kuwa Mkenya is his favourite. In the lyrics, he says he is proud to be a Kenyan.

However, his song Upepo Wavuma Africa (Wind is blowing in Africa) is heart-wrenching.

"I cried my heart out when composing the song in the dead of the night at my bedside. Tears just flowed freely when I thought of it," he says.

The song's intro says: For the last 20 years, people have died, Many have lost their loved ones; so much blood has been shed. Towns have been brought down.

Homes burnt. Bones and bones lie in the streets The cowsheds are empty, the fields are bare The buildings are hollow, the streets are dark.

Yet in our hearts, the heart of Africa, we have hope

And we see the light finally dawning on us.

Have premonition

Did he have a premonition of the violence that rocked the country after the disputed presidential polls? I ask.

The answer is big no, and says his song was in reference to Rwandan experience where more than one million people lost their lives in the genocide, and similar incidents in several other African countries.

In the song, he wonders why African politicians turn against the weak and poor.

The song will surely resonate well with majority of Kenyans who have experienced tribal conflict that almost brought the country to its knees. Despite his tight schedule, Ngecha always finds time to practice guitar after an energy sapping day in office.

He is also a music teacher and assists locally based gospel singers to hone their skills. He has also been a music director for five years at a church in Nairobi.

He has also been contracted by a local church to train youths on vocals, harmony training and playing guitar and piano.

The grade five holder from Associated Board of Royal School of music says he is yet to do a mass recording due to the financial constraint. A project fame entrant, Mr Billy Muturi, attributes his good showing to the skills imparted by Ngecha.

Muturi was only a heartbeat away from the academy and says his mentor's strumming is among the best locally.

"I can only compare his strumming to Harry Kimani of Haiyaa fame," says the upcoming artiste.
