Rift Valley has picked a team of 81 athletes for the Kenya Prisons games at Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi, on May 23 and 24.

The team was selected during the Rift Valley provincial championships at the Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology grounds.

Speaking during the games, Benjamin Njoga, the Regional Provincial Commander, said the team would go for a two-week residential training starting on Monday at the Nakuru Prisons.

Meanwhile, Central Zone bagged 475 points to win the Coast provincial Prisons championships at Shimo La Tewa Prisons, adds Ernest Ndunda.

The zone comprised Shimo la Tewa Main, Shimo la Tewa Women, Boston Institution and Shimo la Tewa Medium stations.

The zone dominated most of the events hence providing the bulk of players for the provincial team.

After the games, 38 men and 20 women were named to form a provincial team for the national champio nships. Coast Province also named darts and volleyball teams for the national championships.

Northern Zone, which comprises Malindi, Kilifi, Hola and Hindi stations settled for the second slot after amassing 300 points.

The third slot went to Western Zone which had Manyani, Voi and Wundanyi with 295 points. Southern Zone, which had Kingorani, Kwale and Provincial Prisons Commandant office trailed with 278 points.

Commandant in charge of Shimo la Tewa Prisons, Wanini Kireri, said yesterday they had selected a strong team for the national championships.

She said Taitano Lumbe has been named as the head coach of the provincial contingent.

At the same time, Shimo la Tewa beat Sportive 3-1 to win the Mtwapa Youth Sports Association football tournament at Mtwapa playgrounds.
