President Kibaki has launched the national fundraiser for the Internally Displaced Persons.

The President appealed to patriotic Kenyans to contribute generously towards the fund, even as he revealed that Algeria had donated 500,000 US dollars.

Each ministry has given their contribution with Agriculture raising the highest amount- Sh 294 million.

Foreign Affairs minister Moses Wetangula has said that Kenyans living in Tanzania and Uganda have each contributed in excess of one million shillings. He also announced that the Chinese Embassy has donated 23,000 US dollars.

The Government intends to raise Sh29 billion from the harambee to help those displaced by the post-election violence rebuild their homes and start a new life.

Already, thousands of uprooted people in various parts of the country have gone back to their homes under the rudi nyumabani programme coordinated by the Government and the Kenya Red Cross.

The government has contributed Sh1 billion for the establishment of the fund headed by retired Catholic Archbishop Ndingi Mwana a'Nzeki.

The launch was held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre, Nairobi.
