Uganda v Kenya
ELGON CUP 4:30 p.m.
The Rugby Cranes are confident but not complacent ahead of Saturday's Guinness-sponsored Elgon Cup first leg clash with eternal rivals Kenya at Kampala Rugby Football Club (RFC).
The ruggers, who started training last week for the event named after Mt. Elgon which covers the border between the two rising African rugby nations, told Daily Monitor they are ready to wrestle the crown from Kenya.
Coach Yayiro Kasasa, who is overseeing the training alongside Technical Director David Dobella, reckons that it will be a tough game in which his charges are ready to exhibit their mettle. "Training with the respective clubs has made our task easier. They are physically fit and all we are working on is to make them gel," Kasasa explained of the 24-man team. Edmond Tumusiime and Joel Anguyo have however been inconsistent in training because they are doing examinations at Makerere University.
A bulk of the team was there when Uganda won the African rugby title with a 42-11 win over Madagascar in Antananarivo last September.
The Cranes lost last year's title to Kenya. Having won the first leg 29-10, they lost 15-35 in Nairobi in agonising fashion. Saturday's action begins with a curtain raiser match between Uganda's women team, the Lady Cranes against their Kenyan counterparts at 2 p.m. The Kenyan contingent arrives today at 10a.m.
East Africa Breweries under their Guinness flagship brand are fully sponsoring the event. The second leg of the Elgon Cup is due August 16 in Kenya.
