PRESIDENT Mwai Kibaki has pledged big cash awards for medal winners in next month's Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Gold medallists will each receive Ksh0.75million (Sh18.8m), silver medallists will pocket Ksh0.5m (Sh10m) while bronze winners will get Ksh0.25m(Sh5.2m).
The Kenyan leader made the assurance on Monday while giving the team to the games a warm send-off at State House, Nairobi.
"This is meant to encourage the best from our team and bring glory to the country," the Kenyan leader said, and predicted that the Beijing Games will be the year for a rich medal harvest for the Kenyan team.
National Olympic Committee chairman Kipchoge Keino urged the government to recognize the athletes by rewarding them with houses, cars or land to stem defections to other countries, notably Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Denmark and the USA.
The games squad consists of 46 athletes (25 male and 21 female, four boxers, three swimmers, two tae kwondo martial artists and a rower.
