Lawyers have opposed the involvement of foreign experts in the constitutional review process.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) have held a meeting with Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs Minister Martha Karua and the Parliamentary Committee on Administration of Justice and Legal Affairs and expressed concern about the inclusion of foreign experts in the process.

The meeting at Hilton Hotel, Nairobi was also attended by Permanent Secretary Amina Mohamed and the parliamentary committee chairman Abdikadir Mohammed.

LSK chairman Okongo O'Mogeni said other than the involvement of foreign experts, the society also raised issues regarding the number of local representatives who would participate in the committee of experts.

"It is in the interest of everybody that we get our act right. We are making some headway in the discussion," Mr O'Mogeni said.

The meeting also discussed the duration the review process should take.

At the same time, the lawyers called for amendments to the two Bills tabled in Parliament that would help jump-start the constitutional review process.

Although the lawyers held a fruitful discussion with Ms Karua and the parliamentary committee they failed to agree on a number of issues, Mr Mohammed said.

They are scheduled to meet on Friday for further deliberations.
