Kampala — AGGREKO, a power utility, has won a $30m contract to generate and supply electricity in Kenya. The Kenya Electricity Generation Company (KenGen) had invited tenders to install emergency thermal generators.
Rupert Soames, Aggreko's chief executive officer, said: "Our selection to supply KenGen with temporary power is a testament to the good experience they have had with Aggreko over the last few years."
Already, the firm is supplying the Kenya Electricity Generation Company with 150 megawatts of temporary power from sites at Embakasi and Eldoret.
The new contract involves generation of additional power at Embakasi, outside Nairobi, and 60 megawatts at a new site near Naivasha.
The contract is for 12-month. Once the additional power capacity is installed Aggreko will be able to dispatch 290MW to the national grid. In Uganda the firm supplies 150MW to the grid.
The firm operates a training centre and engine refurbishment facility at Embakasi both of which help train and transfer valuable skills and knowledge to the 137 locally employed Kenyan workforce.
Aggreko is currently supplying around 1,000MW of temporary power in 20 countries.
